The first step we need to do to create the perfect cartoon waffle is to draw a few basic shapes. These new additions will help is locate the subject in our work space. You can also use these shapes to work on the angle and the proportions of the waffle.
You can start by drawing a large oval shape. Four small triangles are added to illustrate the pattern found on the food. To create some perspective, just make sure that the triangle near the bottom is larger than the one found on top.
Next, it's time to start drawing the subject using the basic shapes as guidelines. In this step, all shapes drawn in the previous step are now filled with colors (to improve the readability of the picture). Triangles are colored in purple while the oval shape is blue. You can draw all four sides of the waffles using long curved lines. Once all lines are added, you can erase the shapes created earlier (we don't need them anymore).
It's time to create depth below the subject. Using mostly vertical lines, make sure that the waffle looks like a 3D object. The bottom of the illustration can be tricky. Waffles can have a small bump all around the main shape. As you can see below, the middle is just empty.
Now the real fun begins! Inside all four panels, you can draw small holes made from square. These new shapes are made from four short lines. Holes near the edges are represented with only three lines. Eight holes are drawn on each side of the food.
Remember that this is not a perfect object. Holes don't need to be exactly the same. This cartoon waffle needs to look organic, not like it was made from plastic. It doesn't matter if things are slightly different from one another.
Once again, clip art waffles need to have some depth. Therefore, we need to draw more lines inside the holes as shown in the picture below. Holes located near the upper part of the sections can only be filled with a single line. Holes near the bottom of the sections must be created using three lines. It's time to add some colors inside the image. First, you can start by adding a bright golden color. Since I prefer to keep this lesson simple, we will not play with gradients, shadows, highlights or reflections. This simple food will only be filled with plain colors.
A second golden color can be added to our work. This one needs to be slightly darker than the original color. This one is added on the edges located below the top shapes.
Two more colors will be needed to complete this lesson on how to draw a waffle. First, you can use another dark version of our golden color inside the remaining edges. This color is also used for both stripes visible on the bottom of the subject. The fourth and last color is only used once in this tutorial. It is much darker than all three original colors and it can be seen on the far right of the image (near the middle).
Let's complete this lesson by adding more colors inside the holes to create even more depth. For this step, we need to use the second darkest color we have used so far (or the one we applied two steps ago).
This color needs to be applied inside all holes as shown in the illustration below. To create a realistic result, make sure that this color in drawn on the left side of the holes. So far, the result is nice, but we need to add one more step to create the perfect cartoon waffle.
This time, let's use the darkest golden color (except for the exception on the right). Once again, we need to apply this color inside all holes, but this time near the right side. The bottom of the holes can be filled with the original color (the brightest one).
